PGA Tour Reportedly Will Restart in June

The PGA Tour plans to resume its 2020 season by playing the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, without fans on June 11-14, according to multiple media reports.

Golf Digest first reported the PGA Tour’s plan on Tuesday, saying that an announcement would be made soon. Tour officials have not responded to the report.

The Charles Schwab Challenge was scheduled for May 21-24, one of numerous tournaments the PGA Tour has postponed or rescheduled after shutting down because of the Coronavirus pandemic on March 13 following the first round of the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

“I hope we start in June, I just think it’s a little unrealistic,” third-ranked Brooks Koepka said. “You have to think about all these guys that are going to be in airports flying everywhere. There are so many guys.

“Everything has to be cleaned. Is it really possible? I hope so. There is nothing more I’d love than to be back playing. I hope I’m wrong.”

The Golf Digest report claimed that PGA Tour officials and the Players Advisory Council discussed scheduling plans during a conference call on Tuesday.

According to the proposed plan, the Charles Schwab Challenge will be followed the next week by the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links at Hilton Head Island, S.C.

The RBC originally was scheduled for April 16-19.

In addition to no spectators being allowed, all players and officials would be tested for the virus at both tournaments for the virus. According to reports, if those events come off without a hitch, the PGA Tour would play the rest of the summer through the Tour Championship.

In addition, the Korn Ferry Tour would start up again after the RBC Heritage and play eight events through August. Korn Ferry Tour players would keep their 2020 status for the 2021 season, which should begin in January.

Among the 10 tournaments canceled were the Players Championship and the 149th Open Championship, which was scheduled for July 16-19 at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, England, where it will be played next year.

The Open had not been canceled since World War II.

The U.S. Open was scheduled for June 18-21 at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., but now the plan is for it to be played on Sept. 17-20 at Winged Foot.

The PGA Championship at Harding Park in San Francisco was supposed to be played on May 14-17, but has been postponed until Aug. 6-9 and there have been rumors that it might be moved from at Harding Park.

The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., traditionally the first major of the season, was set for April 9-12 but has been postponed until Nov. 12-15.

The FedEx Cup Playoffs have been moved, with Northern Trust at TPC Boston scheduled for Aug. 20-23, the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill., set for Aug. 27-30, and The Tour Championship planned for at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta on Sept. 3-7.
