PGA cancels 2016 Grand Slam of Golf

The PGA of America announced that the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, which originally was scheduled to take place at Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles in October, will not be played this year.

The event, which annually features the winners of the four major championships that year, was moved from Trump National in July after presidential candidate Donald Trump made disparaging comments about Mexican illegal immigrants.

“Due to the timing and logistics needed to stage the PGA Grand Slam of Golf to the highest standards, we are disappointed that we will not be able to conduct the event this year,” the PGA of America said in a statement.

“This was a memorable year for major championship golf and the PGA of America congratulates Jordan Spieth, Zach Johnson and Jason Day on their impressive wins. We look forward to conducting the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in 2016.”

There was no word on where the event, which was played from 2007-2014 in Bermuda, will be held in 2016.

However, the Trump people apparently believe they know.

“We’re in constant contact with Pete (Bevacqua, chief executive officer of the PGA); it’s old news,” Larry Glick, Executive Vice President for Strategic Development at Trump Organization, told Golfweek.

“We’ve taken the waterfalls down on (holes) one and 17 (at Trump National Los Angeles) and we’re in a grow in phase right now, and we’re pretty happy, and it will resume next year like planned.”

Since Spieth won the Masters and U.S. Open this year, defending champion Martin Kaymer of Germany had been added to fill out the four-man field of the 2016 Grand Slam of Golf before it was canceled.
