Tom Pernice Jr., who has won five times on the Champions Tour, captured the 47th annual TaylorMade Pebble Beach Invitational Presented by Dell Technologies by two strokes over Mina Harigae of the LPGA Tour and Rob Oppenheim of the PGA Tour at Pebble Beach Golf Links https://www.pebblebeach.com/golf/pebble-beach-golf-links.
The 59-year-old Pernice, who played at UCLA, carded a score of 69-67-69-69—274, 14-under-par, while Harigae, of Monterey, finished at 70-69-71-66—276, and Oppenheim finished at 67-68-69-72—276.
“My short game was stellar this week and it just happened to be my week on the greens,” said Pernice, who has played in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am 25 times and the First Tee Open at Pebble on the Champions Tour nine straight times.
“I just thought I needed to play a good round. I didn’t know if the wind was going to pick up or not, but once it did, I figured if I could have a good round and get in the 60s, I’d have a good shot.”
Harigae, who said she has played Pebble approximately 40 times, started the final round six strokes out of the lead, but posted the low round of the day at 66, which included eagles on the second and 15th holes.
Her runner-up finish was the best by a woman in the tournament since Juli Inkster of Los Altos and San Jose State became the only female winner in 1990.
“I thought after my really good stretch on the front nine, I had a chance to catch (Pernice),” said Harigae, who played college golf at Duke. “And when I had my second eagle, I really thought I had a chance.
“I had a good week and the weather was great. I had a lot of fun, played some good golf and the courses were in amazing shape for this time of the year.”
Daniel Chopra of Sweden was fourth at 66-69-69-73—277, followed by Michael Putnam of Pepperdine at 68-71-68-71—278, Andrew Yun of Stanford at 71-69-70-70—280 and Kevin Sutherland of Sacramento and Fresno State at 73-70-65-73—281.
Joseph Bramlett of Saratoga and Stanford shot 68-73-71-70—282 to tie for eighth with Michael Bradley, who finished at 70-70-69-73—282, and Steve Wheatcroft at 68-73-68-73—282.
The field played Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill Golf Course https://www.pebblebeach.com/golf/spyglass-hill-golf-course and The Links at Spanish Bay https://www.pebblebeach.com/golf/the-links-at-spanish-bay in the first three rounds before the cut was made to 40 players for the final round, which was played at Pebble Beach.
