Pepperdine Women Win Golfweek Red Sky Classic for Second Straight Victory

The ninth-ranked Pepperdine Women’s Golf Team claimed its second victory of the new season with a 10-stroke victory over New Mexico State in the Golfweek Red Sky Classic on the Fazio Course at Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo.

The Waves, who won the Dick McGuire Invitational at University of New Mexico Golf Course in Albuquerque, N.M., to start the season, this time recorded a winning score of 285-288-291—864, even par, while New Mexico State wound up at 295-297-282—874.

“This is a great start to the season with two good wins!” Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs said. “We are very proud of how everyone has contributed to our success. We have some things to work on the next couple of weeks and look forward to some good practices. 

“We are all excited for our trip to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate coming up in  a few weeks.”

Kennesaw State was third at 295-306-287—888, followed by Boise State at 299-299-294—892, and Mercer University at 297-302-294—893, while Arkansas State totaled 291-310-294—895 to tie for sixth with Central Arkansas, which finished at 298-304-293—895, and High Point, which wound up at 294-296-305—895.

Wofford College shot 298-305-296—899 to tie for ninth with North Carolina-Greensboro, which finished at 304-304-291—899.

Alison Gastelum of New Mexico State captured the individual title with a score of 71-70-68—209, seven-under-par, followed by Madison Holmes of Central Arkansas at 71-70-70—211, while Kaleiya Romero of Pepperdine totaled 73-70-71—214 to tie for third with Bella Kil of Kenesaw State, who finished at 71-74-69—214, and Bella Kent of Wofford College, who wound up at 70-72-72—214.

Lauren Gomez of Pepperdine carded a score of 73-71-72—216 to tie for sixth with Alex Crafton of East Tennessee State, who totaled 68-76-72—216, and Julia McLaughin of High Point, who shot 71-71-74—216.

Lion Higo of Pepperdine posted a score of 69-74-74—217 to tie for ninth with Lara Jecnik of Kennesaw State, who finished at 70-79-68—217, and Camilla Jarvela of Mercer, who came in at 70-77-70—217.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion Pepperdine were Jeneath Wong in a tie for 12th at 70-74-74—218, Yourong Chu in a tie for 27th at 74-79-72—225, and KaYee Kwok in a tie for 32nd at 77-73-76—226.
