Pacific’s Scott wins GCU Invitational by 1 shot

Casey Scott of Pacific claimed the first victory of his college career and helped the Tigers finish second behind Missouri in the Grand Canyon University Invitational at GCU Championship Golf Course in Phoenix.

Scott, a sophomore from Indio, posted a score of 69-69-69—207, 6-under-par, to hold off Felix Mory of Cal State Northridge, who finished at 71-69-68—208.

“Casey played solid all weekend,” Pacific Coach John Cook said. “Most impressive, he made two clutch pars on the 16th and 17th holes to help secure the win today.”

Andrew Israelson of North Dakota State was third at 73-68-68—209, while Hayden Buckley of Missouri shot 70-69-71—210 to tie for fourth with Jake Chanen of Grand Canyon, who finished at 70-71-69—210.

Joe Fryer of Long Beach State totaled 71-72-68—211 to tie for sixth with 49er teammate Hunter Reed, who wound up at 69-69-73—211.

Tyler Moore of UC Riverside carded a score of 71-67-74—212 to tie for eighth with Daniel Pena of Pacific, who finished at 69-72-71—212, Matt Echelmeier of Missouri, who wound up at 70-69-73—212, and Matt McClung of Grand Canyon, who came in at 71-72-69—212.

Missouri captured its second victory of the season with a score of 279-278- 293—850, 2-under-par, followed by Pacific at 280-285-287—852.

“I am excited about how hard this team fought all weekend,” Cook said of his Pacific team. “This is our best finish this season and overall I am pleased with how we competed.”

Grand Canyon was third at 285-289-282—856, followed by Long Beach State at 283-284-292—859, UC Riverside at 287-278-297—862 and Missouri-Kansas City at 283-293-290—866.

Wichita State was seventh at 293-284-294—871, followed by Northern Illinois at 291-288-295—874, while Cal State Northridge totaled 289-290-298—877 to tie for ninth with Drake, which wound up at 296-285-296—877.
