Ober Wins L.A. City Senior Title by 2 Shots

David Ober of Riverside came from four strokes back in the final round to win the Los Angeles City Senior Championship by two strokes over defending champion Dan Sullivan of Pasadena and Ian MacDonald of Fullerton on the Harding Course http://golf.lacity.org/course_harding at Griffith Park Golf Club in Los Angeles.

Ober, who was in a tie for ninth place entering the final round, carded a score of 72-70—142, while Sullivan finished at 68-76—144 and MacDonald wound up at 70-74—144.

“I was hoping to shoot one or two under and maybe squeak into third or fourth place,” said Ober, who finished second to Sullivan last year. “There were so many good players ahead of me, I honestly didn’t think I had a chance to win.

“I’ve had some nice finishes over the years in some decent events, but I’ve never won anything other than a couple club championships. To win this tournament against a field like this is something I will never forget.”

Said MacDonald: “Neither Sullivan nor I thought anyone was going to shoot under par today. The pins were too tucked and the greens too bouncy.”

Osbourne Blake of Los Angeles was fourth at 72-73—145, followed by Craig Calkins of Manhattan Beach at 71-75—146 and John Hong of Los Angeles at 69-78—147.

Andy Overton of Lakewood shot 76-72—148 to tie for seventh with Michael Godinez of Los Angeles, who totaled 71-77—148, and 2016 champion Michael Turner of Sherman Oaks, who came in at 71-77—148, while Jeffrey Payne of Santa Ana was 10th at 74-75—149.

Harry Bobbitt of Pasadena captured the A Net Flight with a score of 70-74—144, followed by Rocco Minichiello of Costa Mesa at 71-74—145, Henry Ching of Diamond Bar at 75-72—147 and Jeff Fitch of Corona at 74-75—149, while Charlie Whitaker of Fountain Valley shot 75-75—150 to tie for fifth with James Davidson of Westminster, who wound up at 77-73—150.

James Moylan of Los Angles won the B Net Flight at 74-65—139, followed by Tim Clark of Los Angeles at 71-69—140, Jerry Piro of Glendale at 68-73—141, David St. Onge of Camarillo at 67-75—142 and Bennett Salvay of Woodland Hills at 75-69—144.
