Yealimi Noh’s sizzling summer continues.
Noh, from Concord, celebrated her 17th birthday earlier in the week by winning the 105th Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship by one stroke over Dylan Kim of Sachse, Texas, at Marine Drive Golf Club in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
Last week, Noh won the 70th U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, a week after capturing the 43rd Girls’ Junior PGA Championship, and last month she claimed the 2018 California Junior Girls’ State Championship for the second time in four years.
In addition, early this month she was Northern California medalist in U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship qualifying at Sequoyah Country Club in Oakland.
“This month has been a whirlwind,” said Noh, who turned down a scholarship to UCLA and plans to make her pro debut some time in the next year. “The beginning of the year, I set my goals for the three (tournaments) this month … since I’m not playing as much this summer.
“The biggest goal of mine was to win, well, all of them, but I didn’t think I would win all of them. I would have been really happy to just win one out of three. Winning three in a row is just crazy.”
Noh scrambled for a par on the last hole to win with a score of 66-69-67-71—273, 11-under-par and claimed the Duchess of Connaught Gold Cup.
Kim was tied for the lead going to the last hole, but drove wildly into the left rough and chunked her second shot en route to a bogey that left her in solo second at 66-69-66-73–274.
“I didn’t think at the beginning of the day I would win,” said Noh, who has left Corondelet High and is being home-schooled. “I thought I would shoot at least a couple under, because there was also the other group in front of us.
“I never try to let my guard down. I think coming through 16, 17, 18 I wasn’t really thinking about it, just wanted to get through each hole.”
Lilia Vu of Fountain Valley and shot 73-68-66-68—275 to tie for third with 70-70-68-67—275, Allisen Corpuz of Hawaii and USC, who finished at 70-70-68-67—275, and
Gina Kim of Chapel Hill, N.C., 67-68-71-69—275.
Jennifer Kupcho of Denver was sixth at 64-75-70-68—277, followed by Jennifer Chang of Cary, N.C., at 71-68-69-71—279, while Mariel Galdiano of Hawaii and UCLA totaled 75-68-70-68—281 to tie for eighth with Kaitlyn Papp of Austin, Texas, who finished at 71-72-68-70—281, and Emilee Hoffman of Folsom was 10th at 69-74-69-70—282.
