No. 1 USC wins Mayhem Match Play

Top-ranked USC captured the SDSU March Mayhem Match Play with a 3-and-1 victory over No. 9 Arizona in the championship match at the Farms Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe.

Freshman Robynn Ree and juniors Garbiela Then and Karen Chung won their matches for the Trojans, who won the event for the fourth straight year and claimed their fourth victory of the season.

USC beat UC Irvine, Oregon and Stanford en route to the final.

“This was a great event and a neat format,” USC Coach Andrea Gaston said. “Four rounds, it’s a lot of golf, and gives us good experience. Oregon on Monday was a heck of a match and emotions ran high. It was great to see Victoria come through with a couple great shots to halve her match and give us that win.

“We were able to lead Stanford most of the way, yesterday, as they did not have one of their better days, and today was really good because every match was pretty close. We had the lead but a lot can go wrong in the match and momentum can turn around. I love how Karen closed it out today, nailing that nine iron, against the wind, to within six feet and converting the putt.”

Chung clinched the title with a 1-up victory over Haley Moore, sinking a six-foot birdie putt after Moore missed an eagle try from 10 feet.

Then defeated Lindsey Weaver, 4 and 3, and Ree beat Krystal Quihuis, 3 and 2.

Gigi Stoll of Arizona beat senior Victoria Morgan, 2 and 1, and sophomore Amy Lee of USC was 1 up against Jessica Vasilic through 17 holes when play was halted because the Trojans already had claimed the title.

Cal beat Colorado in the consolation match, 3 and 2, as Carly Childs defeated Alexis Keating, 2 and 1, and Lucia Gutierrez downed Brittany Fan, 3 and 2, while Hannah Su and Marianne Lee both halved their matches.
