Morikawa, Crampton lead Cal to victory

Collin Morikawa and Sebastian Crampton of California tied for medalist honors with two other players and led the Golden Bears to a 20-stroke victory over Texas Tech in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert.

Cal claimed its third victory of the season with a score of 275-274-268—817, 47-under-par, followed by Texas Tech at 284-280-273—837, Colorado at 287-278-280—845, UCLA at 289-290-269—848 and Kansas at 292-287-285—864.

“We played so well this tournament,” said Cal Coach Walter Chun, whose team won the Alister Mackenzie Invitational and the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in October. “I am so proud of these guys. They have worked really hard, and it’s great to see it all paying off.”

TCU was sixth at 293-289-284—866, followed by UC Riverside at 290-290-287—867,

Loyola Marymount at 295-298-279—872 and host Wyoming at 297-284-292—873, while Denver finished at 304-292-282—878 to tie for 10th with Texas-Arlington, which wound up at 292-292-294—878.

Cal State Fullerton finished 22nd at 297-310-294—901.

Morikawa posted a score of 68-69-65—202, 14-under, while Crampton finished at 67-69-66—202, Fredrik Nilehn of Texas Tech totaled 70-67-65—202, and Austin Eckroat of Oklahoma State wound up at 68-70-64—202.

“It was awesome to share the individual victory with Seb,” said Morikawa, who claimed his second college victory and moved to No. 3 in the Golfweek/Amateur Golf.com World Rankings. “He played great all week and it’s amazing that we had the opportunity to both come out on top.”

Added Crampton: “Picking up my first collegiate win has been a goal of mine for a while and it’s nice that it finally happened. However, like the team I can definitely improve in some areas going forward.”

Jamie Cheatham of Cal shot 68-67-72—207 to tie for fifth with Yannik Paul of Colorado, who totaled 71-69-67—207, while Cole Madey of UCLA finished at 69-70-69—208 to tie for seventh with Nick Heinen of Oklahoma State, who came in at 70-69-69—208.

Tyler Collier of UCLA was ninth at 72-71-66—209, while Brandon Tsujimoto of UC Riverside carded a score of 71-71-68—210 to tie for 10th with Peyton Wilhoit of Southern Illinois, who would up at 66-70-74—210.

Matthew Carungay led Loyola Marymount in a tie for 15th at 70-73-69—212, while Martin Manalo of Cal State Fullerton tied for 64th at 74-74-75—223.

Rounding of the scoring for team champion Cal were K.K. Limbhasut in a tie for 12th at 72-70-69—211, Ben Doyle in a tie for 25th at 78-69-68—215 and Finigan Tilly in a tie for 38th at 74-71-73—218.
