PHOENIX, Ariz. – Team Monarch Beach overcame a two-shot deficit in the final round to capture the 2012 TaylorMade OB Sports National Team Championship presented by adidas Golf. Monarch Beach shot a final-round team score of 201 to leap past Longbow Golf Club Team 1 and take the coveted title.
Monarch Beach’s 405 total (204-201) was six shots better than Angel Park Golf Club’s 411 total (205-206) and seven better then the third place team from Sedona Golf Resort, which shot 412 (214-198). The defending champions from Palm Valley Golf Club finished in a two-way tie for fourth place with We-Ko-Pa Golf Club. Both posted team scores of 414.
“This was definitely a ‘team win’ for us,” said Eric Lohman, team captain and General Manager at Monarch Beach Golf Links. “We had three teams play well, but our net teams were able to capitalize on some great birdies. We are very thankful to have been able to play in this first-class event and represent our home club. We are proudly displaying the trophy … in the Monarch Beach Golf Shop, overlooking the ocean.”
In total, 208 national qualifiers participated in the event, representing 23 OB Sports-affiliated golf clubs from throughout the United States. Each club fielded an eight-person team (grouped together in four, two-person teams) made up of seven qualifiers from the club and the club’s golf professional. “The cup” was awarded for the overall TaylorMade OB Sports Team Championship: each of the teams posted its best three, two-person-team net scores, across both days of competition. The 36-hole national event was played concurrently over two courses: ASU Karsten Golf Course and Raven Golf Club – Phoenix.
Past TaylorMade OB Sports team champions include Palm Valley Golf Club (2011), We-Ko-Pa-Golf Club (2010), High Meadow Ranch Golf Club (2009), Tijeras Creek Golf Club (2008) and Sandia Golf Club (2007).
