McNealy wins, Stanford advances

Maverick McNealy claimed medalist honors and led Stanford to second place behind North Carolina-Charlotte in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional at UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.

McNealy, a sophomore from Portola Valley, posted a score of 70-67-70–207, 9-under-par, to claim his sixth victory of the season and tie Patrick Rodgers for second on Stanford’s all-time list for titles in one season, trailing only Tiger Woods’ eight.

Viraat Badhwar of Stanford totaled 73-71-71–215 and tied for 18th with his Cardinal teammate, Franklin Huang, who came in at 74-69-72–215.

North Carolina Charlotte won the team title at 275-291-279–845, 19-under, with Stanford rallying to finish second at 290-275-285–850.

The top five teams in each Regional advanced to the NCAA Championships on May 29-June 3 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.

In the NCAA Bremerton Regional, Rico Hoey finished fourth at 69-69-70–208 and Sean Crocker was ninth at 66-72-73–211 to help USC advance by finishing third on the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain in Bremerton, Wash., with a score of 281-288-278–847.

Also at Bremerton, Byron Meth of Pacific tied for fifth at 74-67-68–209 while playing as an individual and missed advancing by two strokes, and Luke Vivolo shot 70-74-69–213 and Ryan Han totaled 73-70-70–213 in leading UC Davis to a tie for ninth at 289-295-286–879. Kevin DeHuff of Pepperdine tied for 15th at 67-76-70–213 as the Waves finished 11th at 292-295-283–880.

In the NCAA Noblesville Regional at Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind., Jonathan Garrick of UCLA finished third at 69-68-73–210 and helped the Bruins advance with a fourth-place finish at 293-289-287–869.

Xander Schauffle of San Diego State tied for fifth at 70-70-67–207, 3-under, and led the Aztecs to second at 284-283-273–840 in the NCAA New Haven Region on the Course at Yale in New Haven, Conn.

K.K. Limbhasut of Cal tied for fourth in the NCAA Lubbock Regional with a score of 66-68-64–208 and lost in a playoff to advance on his own, while the Golden Bears finished seventh at 279-287-282–848 on the Rawls Course at Lubbock, Texas.

Also at Lubbock, Beau Hossler of Rancho Santa Margarita finished in that tie for fourth with Limbhasut and advanced with Texas, which claimed the team title at 273-282-275–830.

In the NCAA San Diego Regional at The Farms Golf Club, freshman Perry Cohen of St. Mary’s barely missed the only individual qualifying spot by tying for seventh at 73-71-70–214, while the Gaels tied for eighth at 295-298-289–882.

Alex Chairella led University of San Diego in a tie for 29th at 73-77-72–222 as the Toreros tied for 10th at 297-295-297–889.
