McNealy medalist at NCGA Match Play

Maverick McNealy of Portola Valley claimed medalist honors by five shots over Justin Suh of San Jose and Matthew Seramin of San Geronimo in stroke-play qualifying in the 112th Northern California Amateur Match Play Championship at Spyglass Hill Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

McNealy, who captured the Nicklaus and Haskins awards as the best college player in the national last season as a sophomore at Stanford, posted a score of 65-71–136, 8-under-par, breaking the NCGA course record in round one.

“I got a little sloppy,” said McNealy, selected to the U.S. Walker Cup team on Monday, who opened his round with birdies on three of his first five holes before cooling off. “But I’m happy with the body of work over the last two days.”

Suh, the 2014 NGCA Junior champion who is headed for USC, finished at 71-70–141, while Seramin, who played at UC Davis, came in at 70-71–141.

Steven Chung of Sacramento was fourth at 70-73–143, while Andrew Bonner of Ripon and the University of Oregon shot 74-70–144 to tie for fifth with Finigan Tilly of Redwood City, who finished with an identical score of 74-70–144.

Matthew Ashley of San Jose totaled 74-71–145 to tie for seventh with Patrick Soli of Carlmont and Matt Cohn of San Francisco, who both wound up at 71-74–145.

Perry Cohen of San Diego finished at 75-71–146 to tie for 10th with Alex Franklin of San Rafael, who shot 70-76–146, Brandon Lee of Sonoma, who wound up at 75-71–146, and Walker Huddy of Studio City, who came in at 70-76–146.
