Manke, Waves Sweep MacKenzie Invitational

RJ Manke of Pepperdine claimed the individual title and the Waves rallied in the final round to beat California by 11 strokes in the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the Meadow Club (http://www.meadowclub.com/) in Fairfax.

The Waves recorded a school-record score of 270-268-262—800, 52-under-par, also breaking their mark for the best score in a single round to come from six shots behind the Golden Bears on the second day.

“It was great watching them do their thing,” Coach Michael Beard said. “I never got the feeling that when they were 1- or 2-under that they were content with that. They kept trying to make more birdies.

“RJ actually wasn’t hitting it that great during the practice round. But he got into a rhythm in the first round and kept going. The final round, you could tell him where to hit it, and he hit it right there. It was ridiculous. He was in the zone. It was really impressive.

“It’ll be good to see what this win does for the team. The last three years, we’ve started the season poorly. So to do this early on, it’s a good thing. To be able to recall a good tournament or a good round, that’s always a good thing in golf.”

California finished at 258-274-279—811, while San Jose State was third at 269-278-279—826, followed Arizona State at 280-273-274—827 and Santa Clara at 288-276-273—837.
