Madey, UCLA Claim Cowboy Titles

Cole Madey of UCLA claimed the individual title in a playoff against John Murdock of host Wyoming and helped the Bruins win the Wyoming Cowboy Classic at Whirlwind Golf Club https://whirlwindgolf.com in Chandler, Ariz.

UCLA, coached by Derek Freeman, captured its second straight victory with a score of 275-283-283—841, 23-under-par, while Cal State Fullerton was second at 282-278-288—848, followed by Grand Canyon at 291-271-288—850, Wyoming at 291-281-282—854 and Santa Clara at 281-284-291—856.

“Any time you have guys at the top of the leaderboard, you’re going to play well as a team,” Freeman said.

The Bruins, who were winless this season until taking the title recently in the Seattle University Redhawk Invitational, won two straight tournaments for the first time since the 2014-15 season.

Texas-Arlington was sixth at 293-277-287—857, followed by UC Davis at 281-287-295—863, Stephen F. Austin at 290-280-295—865 and Texas-Rio Grande Valley at 296-283-288—867, while Boise State totaled 286-295-287—868 to ioe for 10th with Southern Utah, which finished at 289-290-289—868.

UC Santa Barbara was 14th at 292-290-298—880 and Cal State Northridge wound up 18th at 305-294-302—901.

Madey, a senior from West Linn, Ore., carded a score of 69-67-67—203, 13-under, while Murdock also totaled 69-67-67—203. Madey took his first college title with a birdie on the third playoff hole.

“I was trending in the right direction and let things come together,” said Madey, who birdied three of the last six holes in regulation. “I didn’t really change a lot, but I putted a lot better this week than last tournament. During the playoffs, my ball striking was on point and I put myself in a really good position.”

Joshua Matz of Northern Colorado finished at 69-68-70—207 to tie for third with Jake Chanen of Grand Canyon, who wound up at 70-69-68—207, while Jack Ireland of UCLA was fifth at 67-71-70—208.

Thomas Hutchison of UC Davis shot 66-71-72—209 to tie for sixth with Jake Vincent of Southern Utah, who finished at 74-69-66—209, Steven Fabik of Stephen F. Austin St, who wound up at 70-67-72—209, Konrad Brauckmeyer of Santa Clara, who totaled 72-67-70—209, and Eddy Lai of UCLA, who came in at 68-71-70—209.

Jack Dyer led Cal State Fullerton in a tie for 14th at 69-71-71—211, Tomas Helgo of Cal State Northridge tied for 43rd at 71-71-76—218 and Zach Smith of UC Santa Barbara tied for 56th at 71-73-76—220.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion UCLA were Hidetoshi Yoshihara in a tie for 17th at 67-72-73—212, Patrick Murphy in a tie for 37th at 71-73-73—217 and Sean Maruyama in a tie for 65th at 75-74-73—222.
