Long Beach State’s Avrit Shares Husky Title

Freshman Owen Avrit of Long Beach State shared the individual title in the Husky Invitational with three other golfers and the 49ers finished second when the third and final round was rained out on the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain Golf Club https://goldmountaingolf.com in Bremerton, Wash.

Avrit (pictured), who won the CIF Area Championship last season at Arroyo Grande High, posted a score of 67-71—138, 6-under-par, to tie with Noah Woolsey of Washington, who shot 70-68—138, Spencer Tibbits of Oregon State, who finished at 70-68—138, and Jan Schneider of Washington, who wound up at 66-72—138.

Hunter Epson of Long Beach State totaled 66-73—139, to tie for fifth with Sam Meek of Nevada, who finished at 70-69—139, Daniel Kolar of Washington State, who wound up at 69-70—139, and Henry Lee of Washington, who came in at 68-71—139.

Paul Margolis of Washington carded a score of 70-70—140 to tie for ninth with Nate Stember of Oregon, who finished at 69-71—140.

Trip Morris of Long Beach State shot 72-70—142 to finish in a tie for 13th with Puwit Anupansuebsai of San Diego State, who totaled 71-71—142.

Ash Hakim of St. Mary’s in Moraga carded a score of 75-69—144 to tie for 19th with Christian Banke of San Diego State, who shot 73-71—144, while Zihao Jin of San Diego State totaled 75-70—145 to tie for 24th with Mikey Slesinski of St. Mary’s (71-74—145), Harrison Kingsley of University of San Diego (73-72—145), and Blake Hathcoat of St. Mary’s (69-76—145).

Host Washington claimed the team title at 274-280—554, 22-under, followed by Long Beach State at 276-287—563, Nevada at 288-279—567, Oregon State at 283-286—569 and Oregon at 286-286—572.

“We have a special group of guys,” Long Beach State Coach Michael Wilson said. “It was great to see our freshmen step right into the lineup and have an impact straight away. Owen’s performance was very impressive as well as Trip’s.

“Senior Hunter Epson continues to be a model of consistency as well. We would have loved to see one more round, but I’m proud of the guys and their effort this week.”

San Diego State was sixth at 284-289—573, followed by St. Mary’s at 285-292—577, Seattle at 289-292—581, Boise State at 293-291—584 and New Mexico 296-289—585.

San Diego tied for 293-299—592.
