Lehman wins with 18th hole birdie

Tom Lehman holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win the Encompass Championship by one stroke over Michael Allen and Kirk Triplett at North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill.

The 55-year-old Lehman, who closed with a 2-under-par 70, made his only bogeys of the tournament at Nos. 13 and 14 before bouncing back with birdies on the next two holes and making par on No. 17 ahead of his winning putt.

“It wasn’t my very best performance today, but it was good enough,” said Lehman, who won for the eighth time on the Champions Tour, but for the first time since the 2012 Charles Schwab Cup Championship.

Allen, from San Mateo and Nevada Reno, birdied three of his last four holes to finish with a 67, and Triplett posted a bogey-free 68.

Doug Garwood of Valencia closed with his second 66 in three days to finish two shots back in fourth, while Bart Bryant was another stroke back after a 69.

Esteban Toledo of Mexico shot 67 and was five shots back in a tie for sixth with Russ Cochran (64), Kenny Perry (68), Jeff Sluman (69), Colin Montgomerie of Scotland (70) and Roger Chapman of England (72)
