Jennifer Koga of Sacramento State claimed the individual title by one stroke over Hyeonji Kang of Hawaii and Tiffany Le of UC Riverside to help the Hornets claim their third victory of the season in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic despite windy conditions at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.
Coach David Sutherland’s Hornets won their second straight tournament and third of the season after capturing the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Hawaii recently and winning the Gonzaga Collegiate Invitational to start the season, this time posting a score of 282-297-306—885, while UNLV was second at UNLV 282-304-306—892, followed by Long Beach State at 292-305-299—896, Hawaii at 296-311-297—904, and UC Riverside at 286-309-313—908.
Sacramento State is one victory short of tying the school record of four victories in one season set in 2017-18.
Cal State Fullerton was sixth at 298-300-311—909, followed by Cal Baptist at 297-305-311—913, Fresno State at 297-305-313—915, Santa Clara at 303-311-303—917, and Northern Arizona at 291-312-315—918.
UC Davis finished 12th at 287-311-323—921.
Koga, a junior from Honolulu who is a two-time Big Sky Conference Player of the Year, claimed her second title of the season after also winning the Coeur d’Alene Classic, by posting a score of 67-75-75—217, one-over-par, while Kang finished right behind at 73-74-71—218, and Le wound up at 68-76-74—218.
With another victory, Koga will equal the Sacramento State record of three titles in a season set by Julia Becker in 2016-17.
Jasmine Leovao of Long Beach State was fourth at 68-75-76—219, while Focus Jonglikit of Hawaii totaled 72-76-72—220 to tie for fifth with Borina Sutikto of Santa Clara, who shot 71-77-72—220, and Nicole Lorup of UNLV, who finished at 69-72-79—220.
Sienna Lyford of Sacramento State was eighth at 72-73-77, while Ella Kraft, also of Sacramento State wound up at 73-73-77—223 to tie for ninth with her Hornet teammate, Tess Blair, who came in at 70-76-77—223.
Davina Xanh led Cal State Fullerton in a tie for 11th at 73-73-78—224, while Jinyoung Yun of Fresno State was 14th at 73-74-78—225, Sofia Chabon of California Baptist shot 71-77-79—227 to wind up in a tie for 16th that included Skyler May of UC Davis, who finished at 68-80-79—227.
Rounding out the scoring for team champion Sacramento State were Caitlin Maurice, who carded a score of 73-77-78—228 to end up in a tie for 23rd that included teammate Sneha Sharan, who finished at 76-76-75—228.
