Khaiat Takes 71st SCGA Women’s Club Title

Akemi Khaiat of Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades claimed the 71st Southern California Golf Association Women’s Tournament of Club Champions by three strokes over three players, including defending champion Kathy Kurata, who was playing at her home course of Friendly Hills Country Club http://www.friendlyhillscc.com in Whittier.

The 55-year-old Khaiat shot 4-over-par 75, while Kurata, the 2018 SCGA Women’s Player of the Year and also the winner of this tournament in 2012, finished at 78 to tie for second with Whitney Britton of El Niguel Country Club in Laguna Niguel and Eunice Cho of Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach.

Khaiat captured the Japan Women’s Junior Amateur in 1979 and 1980 before moving to the United States, won the 2015 Japan Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, was medalist at the 2013 SCGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship and is a seven-time women’s club champion at Riviera.

Sherry Wright of Olivas Links Golf Course in Ventura totaled 79 to tie for fifth with Mickey Burgess of Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club and Ran Kean of Vista Valley Golf Club in Vista.

Christine Kang of Costa Mesa Women’s Golf Club finished at 81 to tie for eighth with Carolyn Langevin of La Quinta Country Club, while Jody Duclos of Saticoy Golf Club in Somis wound up at 82 to tie for 10th with Sheri Hauck of San Luis Obispo Country Club and Sherry Smith of Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club.
