Freshman Sabrina Iqbal of Pioneer High in San Jose shot 3-under-par 71 to win the California Interscholastic Federation girls state golf championship by one stroke over Kathleen Scavo of Justin-Sienna in Napa at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga.
Iqbal birdied two of the first three holes and overcame a double bogey in the middle of her round.
“It was exciting,” the 13-year-old Iqbal said.
Brooke Riley of East Union in Manteca shot 73 and tied for third with Bethany Wu of Diamond Bar.
Brigitte Dunne of Oaks Christian in Westlake Village posted at 74 to tie for fifth with Kaitleen Shee and Crystal, both of Diamond Bar.
Samantha Gong of St. Ignatius in San Francisco carded a 75 to tie for eighth with Ali Morallos of Long Beach Wilson, Nina Novilla of Torrance, Calista Reyes of Rancho Bernardo in Poway, Ysabel Tran of Troy in Fullerton and Anna Zhous of Gunn in Palo Alto.
Diamond Bar claimed the team title with a score of 381, followed by Torrey Pines at 401, Rancho Bernardo at 405, St. Francis of Mountain View at 412, Dougherty Valley of San Ramon at 421 and Monte Vista of Danville at 425.
