Ilagan-Ovadia claim SCPGA Women’s title

Erika Ilagan of SeaCliff Country Club in Huntington Beach and Sara Ovadia of the River Course at the Alisal in Solvang captured the Southern California PGA Women’s Team Championship by one stroke over Nikki Gatch of the PGA of America and Nikki Prichard of Arrowhead Golf Course in San Bernardino at Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad.

The Women’s Team Championship was the first of three major events this season in the Women’s Division, with valuable Player of the Year points at stake.

Ilagan (pictured right) and Ovadia (left) collected eight birdies against a single bogey for a score of 7-under-par 65, while Gatch and Prichard had five straight birdies through No. 11 in their 66.

Petra Cole of Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla and Kimberly Falcone of La Jolla Country Club shot 70 to tie for third with Alison Curdt of Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley and Heather King of Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club in San Diego, who stumbled with a double-bogey 6 on the final hole.

Heidi Wright-Tennyson of Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa and Mardell Wilkins of Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Margarita were fifth at 72, followed by Lee Huntley of Birnam Wood Golf Club in Santa Barbara and Bari Brandwynne of Los Angeles Country Club at 73, Rachel Stull of the Bridges at Santa Fe in Rancho Santa Fe and Amberlynn Dorsey of the SCPGA office at 74, and Dale Shaw of La Quinta and Kimberly Coleman of Vista Valley Country Club in Vista at 78.
