Donny Hopoi of Hawaii claimed his first victory since leaving Boise State, winning the 21st Memorial Amateur Championship by four strokes of Michael Slesinski of Freemont at Ancil Hoffman Golf Course in Carmichael.
Hopoi, made birdies on two of his first three holes and added five more in the final round to record a score of 69-67-68—204, 8-under-par, while Slesinski, of Fremont, finished at 68-72-68—208.
Logan Lowe of Grass Valley and George Washington University was third at 69-69-71—209, followed by Thomas Hutchison of San Jose and UC Davis, who finished at 69-69-72—210.
Ahmed Ali of Palo Alto, who has committed to UCLA, shot 69-70-72—211 to tie for fifth with 2015 tournament champion Josh Sedeno of Roseville and the University of Alabama, who finished at 69-70-72—211, Ben Doyle of La Jolla and Cal, who wound up at 70-69-72—211, and defending champion Alex Lee of Sacramento, who came in at 72-70-69—211.
Matt Cohn of San Francisco recorded a score of 69-71-73—213 to tie for ninth with Ryan Han of Davis, who finished at 73-67-73—213.
The tournament, founded by Vietnam Veteran John Rochelle, is played annually on Memorial Day weekend.
