Hermann medals in Cal Amateur

Satch Hermann of Ventura shot 6-under-par 66 to claim medalist honors in stroke play qualifying in the 104th California Amateur Championship at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City.

Hermann, who played at Cal State Northridge, birdied three consecutive holes through No. 16 and added an eagle on the final hole to win by three strokes.

“I hit the ball longer, so coming into this I really wanted to take advantage of some reachable par-5s,” the 26-year-old Herrmann said. “The first day I didn’t do that, playing the par-5s even, but today I was able to take advantage.”

Hermann posted a score of 70-66–136, 8-under, to win by three strokes over Cal sophomore K.K. Limbhasut of Loma Linda, who finished at 68-71–139, UCLA senior Jake Knapp of Costa Mesa, who also totaled 68-71–139, and Puwit Anupansuebsai, a high school sophomore from Anaheim, who came in at 69-70–139.

Lorens Chan of Honolulu carded a score of 68-72–140 and tied for fifth with Sahith Theegala of Chino Hills, who wound up a 72-68–140, while Jonathan De Los Reyes of Sacramento was seventh at 68-73–141.

Ben Doyle of La Jolla shot 71-71–142 to tie for eighth with Keelan Kirkpatrick of Berkeley, who totaled 70-72–142, while James Holley of Chatsworth finished at 72-71–143 to tie for 10th with Justin Avery of Clovis, who wound up at 71-72–143.

The top 32 players in stroke play advance to the match play portion of the tournament that will determine the winner, beginning Wednesday morning.
