Hathcoat wins Saguaro Amateur in playoff

Blake Hathcoat of Fresno came from four strokes down in the Saguaro Amateur by finishing his final round of 7-under-par 65 with six straight birdies, but his day wasn’t done.

Hathcoat, a sophomore at St. Mary’s in Moraga, made par on the second playoff hole to turn back Drew McCullough of Richland, Wash., at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.

By winning, Hathcoat captured the inaugural Troon Saguaro Amateur Series Championship—a four-event series for high-level amateurs, college players, juniors and Troon-facility club champions played throughout the year at Troon-managed facilities.

McCullough, a Wyoming senior who matched Hathcoat’s birdie on the first extra hole, closed with a tournament-record 63.

Hathcoat posted a score of 70-69-65—204, 12-under, while McCullough wound up at 73-68-63—204.

Ryan Knop of Pleasanton who plays at Auburn, winner of the Orlando International Amateur last week and the AGC Tour Championship in December, was third at 71-67-68—206, followed by David Laskin of Elk Grove at 71-64-72—207 and Koichiro Ishika of Tempe, Ariz., at 70-69-69—208.

Joshua Sedeno of Roseville shot 74-66-70—210 to tie for sixth with David Perkins of East Peoria, Ill., who totaled at 69-69-72—210, and Sam Triplett of Scottsdale, Ariz., who came in at 72-71-67—210.

John Souza of Phoenix carded a score of 72-70-69—211 to tie for ninth with Zachary Burry of Quincy, Ill., who finished at 71-69-71—211, Colton Yates of (Scottsdale, Ariz., who shot 71-70-70—211, and John Murdock IV of Laramie, Wyo., who totaled 74-72-65—211.
