Hathcoat, Harned Share Goodwin Title

Blake Hathcoat of St. Mary’s and Sam Harned of Nevada tied for the individual title and Arizona State took home the team championship in The Goodwin at Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto.

Hathcoat (pictured), a senior from Fresno who won the 2020 AmateurGolf.com Silicon Valley Amateur, claimed a share of his second college title with a score of 63-69-68—200, 10-under-par, while Harned, a senior from Rocklin, also won for the second time by shooting 63-70-67—200.

“Blake’s win is likely the best individual finish in SMC history,” Gaels’ Coach Scott Hardy said. “He will join a list of some of the best players in the history of golf to win this event.

“Medalist out of 146 players is an outstanding result. I’m really proud to see Blake’s hard work pay off.”

Tom Gueant of Oregon was third at 69-70-62—201, while Kaito Onishi of USC posted a score of 68-69-66—203 to tie for fourth with Noah Goodwin of SMU, who finished at 67-66-70—203.

Joe Highsmith of Pepperdine was sixth at 67-70-67—204, while Ryggs Johnston of Arizona State totaled 69-69-67—205 to tie for seventh with his Sun Devil teammate, Chun An Yu, who wound up at 71-65-69—205.

Matt McCarty of Santa Clara carded a score of 68-66-73—207 to tie for ninth with Henry Lee of Washington, who came in at 68-70-69—207.

Barclay Brown led Stanford by shooting 72-68-68—208 to finish in a tie for 11th that included Jamie Cheatham of San Diego, who shot 65-72-71—208, while Eddy Lai of UCLA tied for 24th at 72-70-70—212, Luke Adam of Cal Poly SLO tied for 39th at 70-74-70—214, and James Song of Cal tied for 46th at 73-74-69—216.

Jacob Westberg of UC Davis tied for 53rd at 74-73-70—217, Clay Seeber of Long Beach State totaled 77-74-67—218 to wind up in a tie for 59th that included Bryce Wortman of San Jose State, who shot 71-71-76—218, while Riley Killip of Pacific tied for 82nd at 76-77-69—222, and Jacob Smith of Cal Baptist totaled 79-76-70—235 to finish in a tie for 107th with his Lancers teammate James Mackie, who came in at 79-73-73—235.

Arizona State captured its third victory of the season with a score of 278-273-274—825, 15-under, followed by host Stanford at 275-281-277—833, Pepperdine at 282-285-275—842, Washington at 281-286-278—845 and St. Mary’s at 285-282-280—847.

The Sun Devils won The Goodwin, which dates to 1968, for only the second time—the other title coming in 1994.

Nevada was sixth at 284-287-277—848, followed by SMU at 288-283-279—850, Oregon at 283-296-272—851, Georgia Tech at 290-291-273—854, and U. San Diego at 279-293-287—859.

USC tied for 13th at 287-291-286—864, UCLA was 16th at 292-285-288—865, Santa Clara finished 18th at 291-284-293—868, California wound up 21st at 297-299-284—880, followed in order by San Jose State at 290-298-295—883 and Long Beach State at 299-298-287—884.

UC Davis totaled 301-293-294—888 to tie for 25th with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which finished at 292-308-288—888, while Pacific was 27th at 297-303-299—899, followed by California Baptist at 312-308-294—914.
