Blake Hathcoat of Fresno outdueled St.Mary’s College teammate Ethan Farnam of Crystal Lake, Ill., in the final round to win AmateurGolf.com Silicon Valley Amateur by two strokes on the Tournament Course at Coyote Creek Golf Club www.coyotecreekgolf.com in Morgan Hill.
Hathcoat, a senior for the Gaels who won the 2018 Saguaro Amateur, posted a score of 65-70—135, 9-under-par, and Farnam, the reigning Illinois State Amateur champion, finished at 64-63—137.
In a wild final round that included several two- and three-shot swings, Hathcoat built a five-shot lead after five holes, but Farnam battled back and eventually pulled even with an eagle on the 12th hole.
However, Hathcoat birdied the next to holes to regain control and held on down the stretch in his duel with Farnam, which saw them tie only three of the 18 holes.
Ethan Ashbrook of Santa Maria, Evan Peterson of Clovis and Grant Fairbairn of Orinda tied for third with identical scores of 69-70—139.
Alex Chin of Pleasanton and the University of San Francisco, who won the McClure Cup a week earlier at Bayonet Black Horse Golf Club in Seaside, totaled 68-72—140 to tie for sixth with Ash Hakim of San Ramon, who finished at 70-70—140.
Jeffrey Inouye-Wong of Roseville was eighth at 68-73—141, while low mid-amateur Kyle Gentry of Mountain View wound up at 69-73—142 to tie for ninth with Paramdeep Sohdi of Folsom, who came in at 68-74—142.
Daniel O’Connor of San Francisco captured the Senior Division with a score of 73-79—152, followed by Glenn Andrade of Napa, who won the AGC Christmas Classic in December, at 73-80—153 and Rich Rowley of San Jose at 81-74—155.
