Hagy gets Humana Challenge exemption

Brandon Hagy of Westlake Village will make his PGA Tour debut next week in the Humana Challenge in La Quinta, playing on a sponsors exemption.

The 23-year-old Hagy was a two-time All-American at Cal and won four tournaments in his senior season before playing three times on the Web.com Tour and twice on the PGA Tour Canada after graduating last June.

The former Westlake High standout finished 25th in the first stage of Web.com Tour Qualifying School at Morongo Golf Club in Beaumont, but was 33rd in the second state at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta and did not advance to the final stage.

“I’ve been coaching for 43 years; you might put him at the top of my list,” Cal Coach Steve Desimone said of Hagy, who received the 2014 Byron Nelson Award, which goes to a college senior based on his golf, academics and citizenship.

Others who received sponsors exemptions from the Humana include Patrick Rodgers of Stanford, Jason Gore of Pepperdine and Valencia and Scott McCarron of UCLA and Sacramento.
