Randy Haag of Orinda went all the way to Florida to add another victory to his impressive career resume.
The 61-year-old Haag led virtually all the way and captured the 12th Florida Azalea Senior Amateur Championship by five strokes over defending champion Doug Hanzel of Savannah, Ga., at Palatka Golf Club https://palatkagolfclub.com in Palatka, Fla.
Haag, who has won more than 100 amateur events including the 2018 San Francisco Senior City Championship and was inducted into the Northern California Golf Hall of Fame in 2018, posted a score of 65-68-70—203, 7-under-par, while Hanzel, who has won this tournament a record four times, finished at 67-73-68—208.
In addition, Haag was 1993 California State Player of the Year, a four-time Northern California Golf Association Player of the Year and a three-time Amateurgolf.com Player of the Year. He plays out of the Olympic Club in San Francisco and played college golf at San Diego State.
Jack Hall of Savannah was third at 73-70-67—210, while Billy Mitchell of Atlanta shot 68-73-70—211 to tie for fourth with Rusty Strawn of McDonough, Ga., who wound up at 71-71-69—211, and John Foster of Woodstock, Ga., was sixth at 71-67-74—212.
Matthew Avril of Vero Beach, Fla., totaled 71-72-70—213 to tie for seventh with Michael O’Donnell of Brookhaven, Ga., who shot 76-70-67—213, and Stevie Cannady of Pooler, Ga., wound up at 71-73-74—218 to tie for ninth with Mike Poe of Kingsport, Tenn., who came in at 74-73-71—218.
The Florida Azalea Senior Amateur Championship is one of the few sporting events, amateur and professional, that has not been postponed or canceled in recent days because of concerns over the Coronavirus pandemic.
