Groshart, Meng Claim Titles in First Tee National Championship at Stanford

Cooper Groshart of San Luis Obispo captured the Boys Division Flight by three strokes over Robert Thompson of Charlotte, N.C., and Matt Ahlgrim of Farmington, N.M., the third annual First Tee National Championship at Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto.

Megan Meng of Trenton, N.J., won the Girls Division Flight by five shots over Alaythia Hinds of Sacramento.

Both winners received the Tattersall Cup, named for event Chairman Fred Tattersall.

Groshart, who finished in the top 10 in this tournament each of the last two years, posted a score of 73-70-71—214, four-over-par, while Thompson finished at 72-72-73—217 and Ahlgrim wound up at 74-71-72—217.

“This week I’ve just made a ton of friends and seen old friends I don’t get to see that often,” said Groshart, who will be a freshman at Cal State East Bay in the Fall. “This tournament feels like everyone is friends. Everyone is out here for a good time. We want to play some good golf too, but it’s a bunch of friends hanging out on the golf course.”

Sean Kwok of Pleasanton shot 75-74-70—219 to tie for fourth with Kyle Leydon of Commerce City, Colo., who totaled 72-71-76—219, while Sawyer Klein of Denver, Colo., was sixth at 75-71-74—220.

Ryan Calcagno of Sacramento finished at 71-76-74—221 to tie for seventh with Andre Zhang. Also of Sacramento, who wound up at 75-72-74—221, and Diego Ocasio of New York, N.Y., who totaled 71-71-79—221, while Trenton Mieri of Austin, Texas, was 10th at 77-70-75—222.

Meng carded a winning score of 70-72-66—208, followed by Hinds at 72-70-71—213, while Adrienne Ahn of Dallas was third at 74-71-69—214, and Francesca Sumcad of San Jose was fourth at 73-74-68—215.

Norah Yang of Los Altos shot 76-68-74—218 to tie for fifth with Danica Lundgren of Austin, Texas, who totaled 72-75-71—218, Leah Edwards of Greensboro, N.C., who wound up at 71-74-73—218, and Alyssa Stewart of Dallas, Texas, who came in at 75-68-75—218.

Camille Thai of Los Altos was ninth at 74-75-71—220, followed by Staci Pla of Miami of Miami, Fla., at 72-77-72—221.
