Fernandez beats Hermann in Cal Am

Pete Fernandez Jr. of Costa Mesa knocked off top-seeded Satch Hermann of Ventura, 3 and 2, to reach the quarterfinals of the 104th California Amateur Championship at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City.

Fernandez, who played at UC Irvine and won the 2013 Long Beach City Championship, was all square with Hermann through 11 holes before winning three of the next four holes and closing out the match by halving the 16th hole.

In other matches, Shotaro Ban of San Jose needed 19 holes to beat his Cal teammate, Keenan Kilpatrick of Berkeley; Cody Blick of Danville turned back K.K. Limbhasut of Loma Linda, 3 and 1; Franklin Huang of Poway beat Gordon Neale of Dove Canyon on the 19th hole; Jake Knapp of Costa Mesa defeated Shintaro Ban of San Jose, 3 and 2; Joshua Sedeno of Roseville downed Hunter Rappleye of Elk Grove, 3 and 1; Ramie Sprinkling of Camarillo eliminated high school sophomore Puwit Anupansuebsai of Anaheim, 1 up, and James Holley of Chatsworth took out Matthew Seramin of San Geronimo, 3 and 2.

In the quarterfinals on Friday morning, Fernandez will face Ban, with Blick playing Huang, Knapp going against Sedeno and Sprinkling taking on Holley.

The semifinals will be played Friday afternoon, with the final set for Saturday.
