Farmers Insurance has extended its sponsorship of the PGA Tour event at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla for seven years through 2026.
The tournament, which was first contested as the San Diego Open in 1952 when Ted Kroll claimed the title, has been played as the Farmers Insurance Open since 2010, when Ben Crane was the winner.
“Farmers Insurance has been incredibly supportive of the tournament and the Century Club’s charitable initiatives since first committing to become the title sponsor in 2010,” Commissioner Jay Monahan of the PGA Tour said.
“We are extremely grateful for the strong support of Farmers and its active role as title sponsor, and we are excited by the commitment Farmers has made to continue sponsorship of the Farmers Insurance Open for an additional seven years.”
The event will be played for the 67th time beginning Thursday, with Jon Rahm of Spain as the defending champion.
Tiger Woods, who this week is beginning his latest comeback after a four back surgeries in the last several years, has won the tournament a record seven times, the last 2013. He missed the cut last year in his only PGA Tour event of the season before having his latest surgery.
Woods also won the 2008 U.S. Open for his 14th major title in an epic 19-hole playoff over Rocco Mediate on the South Course at Torrey Pines.
Other former champions include Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Tom Watson, Johnny Miller and local favorites Phil Mickelson, Billy Casper, Gene Littler and Scott Simpson.
