Christopher Evans of Bermuda Dunes weathered steady rain to shoot 6-under-par 66 in the final round and win the 91st Southern California Open by one stroke over Kenny Pigman of Norco and Ben Briscoe of San Clemente on the Eisenhower Course at Industry Hills Golf Club in the City of Industry.
The 30-year-old Evans came from eight strokes down in the final round and posted a score of 70-70-66—206, 9-under, carding two eagles and two birdies in the final round.
“Growing up in the state of Washington, playing in weather like this in high school and college just got me prepared,” said Evans, who has played on the Web.com Tour and the PGA Tour Latinoamerica. “I didn’t wear a rain jacket all day and just figured I was in here to the end.
“I struck it pretty well but made a few mistakes in the first two rounds, although I was able to keep myself in play. … I wasn’t sure if I would be in the position to win, but knew if I threw in a low round today, maybe a chance. … It feels great.”
Pigman, who also finished second last year, carded a scored of 72-65-70—207, while Briscoe finished at 70-70-67—207.
Hunter Epson of Long Beach shot 67-65-76—208 to tie for third with Christian Rajcic of Ramona, who wound up at 70-67-71—208, and Andrew Levitt of Ladera Ranch, who came in at 67-71-70—208.
Alex Bungert of Rancho Santa Margarita totaled 68-69-72—209 to tie for seventh with Sean Birren of La Verne, who finished at 68-70-71—209, and Samuel Cyr of San Diego, who wound up at 71-69-69—209, while Cory McElyea of Santa Cruz was 10th at 67-68-75—210.
