Pepperdine rallied from a 12-stroke deficit in the final round to win the Amer Ari Invitational, and the Waves’ William Mouw claimed the individual title in a playoff on the Waikoloa Kings Course www.waikoloabeachgolf.com/waikoloa-golf-kings-course in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
The Waves, who won their own Southwestern Invitational to start a week earlier and have won three times during the 2019-20 season, posted a score of 281-274-270—825, 39-under-par, while Texas was second at 274-274-279—827, followed by Arizona State at 275-275-278—828, Oklahoma State at 276-282-271—829 and Georgia Tech at 274-269-287—830.
Pepperdine, which claimed back-to-back victories for the first time since 1996, has won three tournaments in a season for the second straight year and the fourth time in program history.
Mouw and Dylan Menante made eagles on their final holes to pull out the victory.
“It was an insane finish, just incredible,” Pepperdone Coach Michael Beard said. “What Dylan and Mouw did, that was crazy. Mouw made a six-foot birdie on 17 and a 45-foot eagle putt on 18 to tie before winning in the playoff.
“Dylan hit an unbelievable 4-iron on 18 to six feet and made an eagle, hit to seven feet on 1 for a birdie, and made it from 20 feet on No. 2, his last hole, for an eagle. We needed all of that the way it was going.
“This was just a total team win. This is probably one of the bigger tournaments we’ve won. We’re just going to keep going and get ready for The Prestige.”
