DeChambeau-Na Share QBE Shootout Lead

Bryson DeChambeau and Kevin Na eagled the 14th hole and birdied the next three to shoot 13-under-par 59 in scramble play to share the first-round lead in the 30th QBE Shootout with Brian Harman-Patton Kizzire and Emiliano Grillo-Graeme McDowell at Tiburon Golf Club  https://www.tiburonnaples.com on the grounds of the Ritz-Carlton Resort in Naples, Fla.

The tournament, hosted by Greg Norman, started out as the Shark Shootout at Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks in 1989.

“I think we really ham-and-egged it,” said Na, from Diamond Bar. “My job is to hit the fairway (off the tee) and then let Bryson bomb one out there. I think I missed only one fairway and we used only one of my drives. It was fun, but I think tomorrow is going to be tough. If we can do what we did today, we’ll be fine”

Said DeChambeau, from Clovis: “I love to be able to rely on a guy who can really putt and has great ball-striking capabilities. We always have one in play, in a good position. We’re never out of play.”

Lexi Thompson, the only woman in the field, and Tony Finau were two strokes back at 61 in a tie for fourth with Charley Hoffman of Poway-Gary Woodland and Charles Howell III-Luke List.

Defending champions Steve Stricker and Sean’ O’Hair eagled the 10th hole en route to a 62 and are tied for seventh with Bubba Watson-Harold Varner III.

Pat Perez of San Diego and Kyle Stanley shot 63 and are tied for ninth with Luke Donald-Andrew Landry, Cameron Champ of Sacramento-/Kevin Kisner, and Billy Horschel-Brandt Snedeker.

The teams will play modified alternate shot on Saturday, and close with better ball on Sunday.
