De La Salle High, Knight of Foothill Win CIF State Boys Golf Championships

Brandon Knight of Foothill High in Pleasanton claimed the individual crown and De La Salle High of Concord captured the team title in the 2022 CIF State Boys Golf Championships at San Gabriel Country Club.

Knight, a junior, sank a birdie putt on his 17th hole and finished at 5-under par 66 to edge Eric Lee of Sunny Hills in Fullerton and Edan Cui of Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough by one stroke.

“It feels great,” said Knight, who also captured the 2021 Callaway World Championship, said in an interview with the Southern California Golf Association. “I’ve been playing some pretty good golf recently. It’s awesome. Everything went right today. I made some putts and everything else was good.”

Joey Hayden of De La Salle was fourth at 68, followed by Spartan teammate Joshua Kim at 69, while Josh Chung of Torrey Pines shot 70 to tie for sixth with Jaden Dumdumaya of De La Salle and Luke Potter of Classical Academy in Escondido.

Troy Tarvin of Edison in Huntington Beach totaled 71 to tie for ninth with Connor Williams of San Pasqual in Escondido, Gavin McCormick of Thousand Oaks, Matthew Robles of Warren in Downey, Zachary Mate of Cosumnes Oaks in Elk Grove and Aiden Tran of Clovis North.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion De La Salle were Jack Jerge in a tie for 15th at 72, Colin Keith in a tie for 20th at 73, and Cameron Keith in a tie for 30th at 76.

De La Salle, which recently won Northern California CIF title for a record sixth time, captured its first state boys golf title since 2006 with a score of 3-under 352, followed by Torrey Pines at 363 and Sunny Hills at 371.

“I’ve been coaching almost 40 years now and this is probably the best high school team that I’ve seen in Northern California, without a doubt,” Coach Jim Collins said about his De La Salle team.

Foothill was fourth at 373, followed by Edison at 378, and Dougherty Valley in San Ramon at 382.
