Day out because of thumb injury

Jason Day of Australia withdrew from the WGC-Cadillac Championship before the start of round one because of an injury to his left thumb.

Day, who captured the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in his last outing, was set to play with Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy on the new TPC Blue Monster at Trump National Doral in Miami.

“My left thumb was bothering me at the Match Play Championship and the pain continued here this week,” said Day, who is No. 4 in the World Golf Rankings. “I had an MRI yesterday here in Miami which fortunately was negative, but the doctor prescribed rest.

“My plan is to rest for a couple of weeks. I’m sorry to miss the Cadillac Championship; it looks like it’s going to be a great event.”

Day, who has finished in the top three in two of the last three Masters, has committed to play in the Arnold Palmer Invitational in two weeks at Bay Hill as he heads toward the first major of the year next month at Augusta.
