Danielson wins Northern Trust Showcase

Charlie Danielson of Illinois shot a bogey-free 3-under-par 68 to win the second Northern Trust Open Collegiate Showcase and earn an exemption into the Northern Trust Open this week at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.

Danielson, a senior from Osceola, Wis., finished three strokes ahead of Jonathan Garrick of UCLA and Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest, winner in the inaugural event last year, who both shot 71.

“This was one of the cooler events I’ve had since I’ve been in college,” said Danielson, a three-time All-American. “It means a lot to play this week at the Northern Trust Open because I was fortunate enough to be able to come on the trip because our team had such a great year.

“And to come play with donors and Coach (Mike) Small, it was a treat. To play in my first PGA TOUR event and have it be at Riviera, here at the Northern Trust Open, I am just grateful for the opportunity.”

Beau Hossler of Texas and Mission Viejo shot 72 and tied for fourth with Lee McCoy of Georgia.

Jordan Spieth, who played at Texas, teamed with two amateurs to post a score of 61 to win the best-ball portion of the tournament and earned $50,000 for the Longhorns’ golf program.
