Chen, Cal Bears Sweep Titles in Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve in Carmel

Kuangyu “Tony” Chen of the University of California claimed the individual title and led the Golden Bears to the team championship in the Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve Golf Club in Carmel.

The 18th-ranked Bears, behind Coach Walter Chun, posted their second straight victory to end the Fall Season after also winning the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, by recording a score of 290-277-276—843, 21-under-par, while UCLA totaled 282-280-286—848 to tie for second with Northwestern, which finished at 294-279-275—848.

Oregon was fourth at 280-283-289—852, followed by Duke at 286-286-283—855, while Ohio State shot 284-282-292—858 to tie for sixth with Colorado State, which wound up at 287-287-284—858.

Oregon State was eighth at 284-286-289—859, followed by USC at 283-287-290—860, while host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo carded a score of 288-292-281—861 to tie for 10th with Southern Methodist, which finished at 289-282-290—861.

University of San Diego was 14th at 303-285-286—874, followed by the University of San Francisco at 299-285-298—882.

Chen, a redshirt junior from China who also has Australian citizenship and played high school golf at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., earned his first college victory with a score of 75-66-65—206, 10-under-par, coming from five strokes behind in the final round to beat runner-up Omar Morales of UC LA, who shot 70-68-69—207.

Luke Powell of UCLA totaled 70-66-72—208 to tie for third with Alexandre Vandermoten of Jacksonville, who finished at 73-67-68—208, and Gregory Solhang of Oregon, who wound up at 70-68-70—208.

Daniel Svard of Northwestern shot 74-69-66—209 to tie for sixth with his Wildcats teammate, Cameron Adam, who finished at 71-70-68—209, and Nate Stember of Oregon, who wound up at 67-69-73—209.

Nathan Wang of Cal, a sophomore from Fremont, recorded a score of 69-71-70—210 to tie for ninth with Ben Quick of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, who posted a score of 74-71-65—210, Barend Botha of Toledo, who totaled 69-72-69—210, and Luke Sample of Duke, who came in at 71-69-70—210.

Nicolas Dominguez led USC made two late birdies to finish at 67-73-72—212 in a tie for 15th, Andi X of San Diego totaled 76-67-70—to tie for 21st, and Renato Naula of USF tied for 28th at 72-68-75—215.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion Cal were Daniel Heo, a sophomore from Cypress, who tied for 13th at 69-70-72—211, Charlie Berridge, a junior from Scottsdale, Ariz, who tied for 21st at 71-73-69—213, Ethan Chung, a junior from Eastvale, who tied for 28th at 75-67-73—215, and Ethan Fang, a freshman from Plano, Texas, who tied for 57th at 75-75-72—222.

Cal, which also defeated Stanford, 4-3, in the Big Match during the Fall Season at Menlo Country Club in Woodside, will open the Spring Season in the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village on Jan. 29.
