Castillo Wins, CS Fullerton Ties USF for Title

Derek Castillo and Jack Dyer of Cal State Fullerton finished 1-2 in the individual standings and the Titans shared the team championship with San Francisco in the Orange County Collegiate Classic in windy conditions on the South Course at Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club www.golflink.com/golf-courses/ca/coto-de-caza in Coto de Caza.

Castillo (pictured), a senior from Yorba Linda, claimed his second title of the season and third of his college career by seven strokes with a score of 68-68-72—208, 8-under-par, while Dyer totaled 72-71-72—215.

Tim Widing of San Francisco was third at 71-74-71—216, followed by his Dons teammate Alex Chin at 71-73-73—217 and Reece Nilsen of Grand Canyon at 71-75-72—218.

Jonathan Kang of UC Irvine shot 77-73-71—221 to tie for sixth with Matthew Anderson of San Francisco, who finished at 71-76-74—221, and Riley Bell of Sacramento State, who wound up at 72-72-77—221.

Cameron Meeks of Loyola Marymount totaled 78-74-70—222 to finish in a huge tie for ninth with Alex Conley of Santa Clara (77-73-72—222), Cedric Otten of North Alabama (75-75-72—222), Brett Bennett of UC Santa Barbara (74-76-72—222), Casey Leebrick of Sacramento State (78-71-73—222), Toby Briggs of San Francisco (78-71-73—222),

Patrick Allgeier of Butler (76-73-73—222), Justin Egelske of Loyola Marymount (77-71-74—222), Jake Chanen of Grand Canyon (77-70-75—222) and Justin Cross of California Baptist (70-77-75—222).

Jacob Johnson led UC San Diego in a tie for 21st at 70-74-80—224, Tanner Podres of Cal Poly SLO tied for 25th at 78-72-76—226, and Mats Ege of Cal State Northridge tied for 40th at 74-75-81—230.

Rounding out the scoring for co-champion Cal State Fullerton were Matt Rafter in a tie for 23rd at 80-76-69—225, Dalton Daniel in a tie for 46th at 78-75-78—231, Garrett Boe in a tie for 50th at 79-79-74—232, Trevor McNarry in a tie for 55th at 83-80-70—233, Jess Scheller in solo 62nd at 78-77-81—236 and Blake Petchel in a tie for 89th at 81-81-86—248. The last three played as individuals.

For San Francisco, Soren Lind tied for 60th at 79-76-79—234.

San Francisco posted a score of 291-294-291—876, 12-over, while Cal State Fullerton wound up at 299-294-283—876.

Grand Canyon was third at 302-297-296—895, while UC Santa Barbara totaled 299-305-296—900 to tie for fourth with Santa Clara, which finished at 314-294-292—900, and UC Irvine, which came in at 302-298-300—900.

California Baptist was seventh at 300-304-301—905, followed by Loyola Marymount at 313-299-296—908, and Butler at 311-306-296—913, while UC San Diego finished at 297-306-315–918 to tie for 10th with Central Arkansas, which wound up at 308-307-303—918.

Sacramento State was 12th at 308-304-308—920, followed by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at 305-307-312—924, while Cal State Northridge finished 15th at 310-299-324—933, and UC Riverside was 17th at 321-317-328—966.
