Cal’s Panay Claims Silverado Am by 1 Shot

Costas Panay, a sophomore at Cal, came from three strokes down in the final round to win the Silverado Amateur by one stroke over Cameron Henry of Los Gatos and USC on the North Course at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa.

Panay, who redshirted last season at Cal, made a 10-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole in the final round to win with a score of 69-72-67—208, 8-under-par to prevail on the course that hosts the Safeway Open on the PGA Tour.

“It feels amazing,” said Panay, who was medalist in the 2018 San Ramon Open. “To play golf at a high level, my teammates and I all have to put in an incredible amount of hard work, and it’s really nice to see it pay off.

“It feels both humbling and energizing. My focus today was on my mental game. I have been working hard on it, and while I felt pressure, I was able to fight it off. … It’s my first tournament since March, because of COVID. I’m so grateful to be out here. It’s beyond cool.”

Said Cal Coach Walter Chun: “We’re proud of him for investing so much time into his game to get to this moment. The win is very well deserved and we look forward to his contributions this year.”

Henry finished second at 66-73-70—209, while David Na of Alameda and Holy Names University in Oakland shot 70-71-70—211 to tie for third with Ty Griggs of Manteca and UCLA, who finished at 72-68-71—211 and Brock Stanger of Orem, Utah, and BYU, who wound up at 70-68-73—211.
