Callaway says they pulled out all the stops with this new, top of the line model. Especially interesting is the use of a titanium Ai Smart Face with a steel body. Titanium and steel have very different properties and titanium is great for club faces as evidenced by its use in many current model drivers. But has a drawback.

Titanium doesn’t weld to steel easily, so Callaway invented and patented a new brazing technique to attach the two metals while retaining the large amount flexibility of the titanium face and the high strength of the steel body.

“Titanium, like in drivers, is flexible and allows for high deflection with rebound, which is great for energy transfer and ball speeds,” said Brian Williams – VP of R&D. “We also knew we could leverage it for unique spin control. However, fusing titanium with steel, which don’t naturally join, required a new fusion methodology. Conventional methods like brazing or swaging had trade-offs, so we had to innovate to make this work without compromises.”

The titanium face also is backed in the head interior by urethane microspheres which help to give a feel similar to a conventional single-piece iron. The combination of materials produces excellent ball speed and consistency with less dispersion.

Players also will like the black DLC finish which is much more durable than the usual PVD.
