The California Golden Bears simply own the Alister Mackenzie Invitational.
Cal’s men’s golf team rolled to a 15-stroke victory over New Mexico at Meadow Club in Fairfax, winning the tournament for the second straight season and for the 13th time in its 19-year history.
The Bears, who also teamed with the Cal women’s team to capture The Big Match over arch-rival Stanford recently, led virtually from the start and posted a winning score of 262-260-279—801, 51-under-par, while runner-up New Mexico finished at 273-268-275—816.
San Jose State was third at 273-271-275—819, followed by St. Mary’s of Moraga at 275-267-280—822, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at 271-281-274—826 and San Francisco at 270-278-281—829.
UC Davis totaled 279-273-278—830 to tie for seventh with Minnesota, which wound up at 274-280-276—830, while Fresno State was ninth at 275-284-273—832, and the University of San Diego finished 10th at 277-282-278—837.
California’s “B” team wound up 11th at 275-285-280—840, while Santa Clara totaled 284-278-289—851 to tie for 12th with UC Santa Barbara, which totaled 282-283-286—851, and Harvard, which came in at 285-288-278—851.
Treed Huang of UC Davis, a freshman from Katy, Texas, posted a score of 66-66-65—197, 16-under-par, to tie for his first college title with Bastien Amat of New Mexico, who finished at 68-65-64—197, while Nathan Wang, a sophomore from Fremont, led team champion Cal in solo third at 65-63-70—198.
Matthew Sutherland of Fresno State carded a score of 65-70-64—199 to tie for fourth with Kristian Bressum of St. Mary’s, who totaled 68-62-69—199, while Kuangyu Chen of Cal was sixth at 65-67-68—200.
Connor Reis of St. Mary’s shot 67-66-68—201 to tie for seventh with Benjamin Partridge of San Francisco, who finished at 65-66-70—201, while Andi Xu of U.C. San Diego wound up at 67-70-65—202 in a tie for ninth with Jacob Pederson of Minnesota, who came in at 71-66-65—202.
Zubair Firdaus led San Jose State in a tie for 11th at 68-68-67—203, Nickolas Waldock of UC Santa Barbara shot 68-67-71—206 to wind up in a tie for 15th that included Baron Szeto of Cal Poly SLO, who finished at 67-68-71—206, while J.P. Odland of Santa Clara tied for 20th at 68-69-70—207.
Rounding out the scoring for team champion California were Ethan Fang in solo 14th at 65-67-73—205; Eric Lee in a tie for 15th at 67-66-73—206, Sampson Zheng in a tie for 20th at 75-64-68—207; Ethan Chung in a tie for 28th at 69-71-69—209; Jeewon Park at 69-73-69—211 in a tie for 34th that included his Bears teammate Charlie Berridge, who finished at 69-70-72—211; Daniel Heo, who tied for 47th at 69-70-72—211; Costas Panay, who tied for 51st at 73-71-70—214, and Papon Sawatyanon, who tied for 71st at 68-77-75—220.
