Cal State Fullerton, McDowell of UC San Diego Win at Orange County Collegiate

Davis McDowell of UC San Diego captured the individual title and Cal State Fullerton repeated as team champion in the Orange County Collegiate Classic on the South Course at Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club.

McDowell, a redshirt sophomore from San Rafael, claimed his first college victory by carding a score of 66-73-69—208, eight-under-par, while Harris Doig of Cal State Fullerton was second at 70-65-75—210, followed by Garrett Boe of Cal State Fullerton at 69-74-68—211, Jackson Parrish of Cal Poly SLO at 77-66-72—215, and Matthew Schafer of Cal State Fullerton at 69-72-75—216.

“Congrats to Davis McDowell for winning the Orange County Collegiate Classic, the first victory of his Triton career!” the UC San Diego Golf Team wrote on its Twitter page. “He was 8-under par with rounds of 66, 73, and 69 to take individual medalist honors by 2 strokes!”

With his victory, McDowell became the first tournament champion from UC San Diego since the Tritons moved to the NCAA Division I level for the 2020-21 academic season.

Austin Liu of Cal Poly SLO was sixth at 71-72-74—217, followed by Josh Hu of UC Riverside at 72-74-73—219 and Trevor McNary of Cal State Fullerton at 78-75-67—220, while Brannon Fahrny of Cal State Fullerton shot 73-74-74—221 to tie for ninth with Aidan Schumer of British Columbia, who wound up at 69-76-76—221.

Mason Benbrook led UC Santa Barbara in a tie for 11th at 74-75-73—222, while Rei Harashima of UC Irvine tied for 22nd at 74-78-74—226, and Eeli Kujanpaa of California Baptist wound up at 74-81-73—228 to finish in a tie for 27th that included teammate James Mackie, who totaled 79-75-74—228.

Rounding out the scoring for team champion Cal State Fullerton were Howard Yoon at 78-71-75—224 in a tie for 18th that included teammate Russell Howlett, who shot 75-73-76—224, while Harry Fearn tied for 20th at 74-71-80—225, Cameron Xao was solo 43rd at 77-76-83—236, and Dylan Walsh was in a tie for 45th at 79-77-83—239.

Cal State Fullerton claimed its first title since winning this tournament last year, posting a score of 281-285-284—850, 14-under-par, while Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was second at 292-288-290—870, followed by UC San Diego at 291-298-291—880, British Columbia at 299-294-305—898, and UC Santa Barbara at 301-294-304—899.

UC Irvine was sixth at 301-296-306—903, followed by Cal State Fullerton’s B Team at 304-291-314—909, California Baptist at 306-309-301—916, UC Riverside at 311-299-309—919, and Fraser Valley at 304-315-315—934.
