Garrett Boe of Clovis finally found his way back to the winner’s circle.
The 21-year-old Boe, a senior at Cal State Fullerton, shot a bogey-free 66 in the final round to win the Grapevine Amateur by three strokes over Ryan Firpo of Davis on the North Course at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa.
Silverado’s North Course is the site of the season-opening event on the PGA Tour, the Fortinet Amateur, which was won by Max Homa of Valencia and Cal in September.
Boe, who claimed three victories in each of his final three seasons on the Junior Golf Association of Northern California Tour but was winless since, broke that streak by carding a score of 69-72-66—207, nine-under-par, while Firpo, a senior at Davis High who has committed to Fresno State, finished at 69-71-70—210.
After opening the final round with four straight pars, Boe took command with four birdies in five holes through No. 9 and added two more coming home to pull away. Firpo, whose best golf came when he closed round one with birdie-birdie-eagle, couldn’t keep up in the last round despite collecting six birdies because he also had four bogeys.
Edan Cui of Atherton was third at 75-70-69—214, while Brandon Knight of Pleasanton carded a score of 72-71-72—215 to tie for third with Mason Benbrook of Carmichael, who finished at 73-70-72—215.
Nikolai Friedman of Mill Valley totaled 69-72-76—217 to tie for sixth with Michael Burry of Saratoga, who wound up at 72-70-75—217, while Riley Bell of Yuba City shot 69-75-74—218 to tie for eighth with Brady Siravo of Sacramento, who came in a 73-71-74—218, and Ben Friedman of Mill Valley was 10th at 71-73-75—219.
The Grapevine Amateur is an event in the Troon Saguaro Amateur Series and the next tournament on the circuit is the Sonoran Amateur, next Monday through Wednesday at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
