Devon Bling of Ridgecrest didn’t take long to get over losing in the final of the 118th United States Amateur Championship two weeks ago at Pebble Beach.
Bling, a sophomore at UCLA, collected five birdies on the back nine in the final round to capture the 94th California State Fair Amateur at http://Alister Mackenzie Golf Course at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento.
The 18-year-old Bling posted a score of 66-69-67—202, 14-under-par, to win by two strokes over Shawn Lu of Honolulu, who finished at 71-67-66—204.
Second-round leader Matt Cohn of San Francisco, the reigning Northern California Mid-Amateur champion, shot 65-69-72—206 to tie for third with Matt Lutz of Placentia, who wound up at 70-66-70—206, Trey Davis of Olivehurst, who totaled 67-73-66—206, and Thomas Hutchison of San Jose, who came in at 69-68-69—206.
Sam Harned of Rocklin posted a score of 68-73-66—207 to tie for seventh with Zach Smith of Isla Vista, who finished at 68-70-69—207, and Finigan Tilly of San Carlos, who wound up at 69-67-71—207, while Ramiz Jamal of Huntington Beach was 10th at 70-70-68—208.
Lucas Carper, 17, from San Jose and a UC Davis commit, finished in a tie for 12th at 63-72-75—210 after taking the first-round lead and being in contention much of the way.
Defending champion Bobby Bucey of Concord totaled 74-67-74—215 and wound up in a tie for 36th that included Robert Hamilton of Gold River, the 2000 and 2001 State Fair winner, who finished at 66-75-74—215.
