Trevor Algya of Loyola Marymount captured the individual title by one stroke over teammate Tony Hendricks and they led the Lions to the team championship by seven strokes over Florida Gulf Coast in the inaugural Kapolei Invitational at Kapolei Golf Course in Kapolei on the Big Island of Hawaii.
The Lions claimed their third title of the Fall Season, also winning the Golfweek Fall Invitational and the USF Howard Invitational, by posting a score of 276-264-266—806, a whopping 58-under-par, whole Florida Gulf Coast wound up at 268-278-267—813.
Baylor was third at 269-277-271—817, followed by Texas State at 271-274-275—820 and Augusta State at 272-280-273—825, while UC Irvine totaled 272-279-275—826 to tie for sixth with Brigham Young, which finished at 277-276-273—826.
UC San Diego was eighth at 276-277-276—829, followed by Mississippi State at 284-270-276—830, and host Hawaii at 281-275-279—835.
California Baptist was 15th at 281-288-275—844, while UC Riverside finished 18th at 286-291-293—870.
Algya, a Loyola Marymount sophomore from Highland Village, Texas, earned his first college victory with birdies on the last two holes to post a score of 72-62-65—199, while Hendricks, a graduate student senior from Phoenix, finished at 66-66-68—200.
Riley Lewis, a Lions senior from Prescott, Ariz., shot 65-68-68—201 to tie for third with Sebastian Gamboa of Florida Gulf Coast, who finished at r66-68-67—201, while Sakke Siltala of Texas State totaled 67-68-67—202 to tie for fifth with Trey Bosco of Baylor, who wound up at 66-68-68—202, and Dain Richie of Southern Illinois was eighth at 66-67-70—203.
Joe Sullivan of Florida Gulf Coast carded a score of 67-72-65—204 and finished in a huge tie for eighth with Johnny Keefer of Baylor (68-69-67—204), Austin Cherichella of Florida Gulf Coast (68-69-67—204), Max Brenchley of Brigham Young (67-70-67—204), Ryan van der Klist of Augusta State (66-70-68—204), Luke Dossey of Baylor (67-68-69—204), Dawson Booth of Augusta State (68-66-70—204), and Hunter Logan of Mississippi State (67-66-71—204).
Kyle Dougherty led UC San Diego in a tie for 16th at 66-66-73—205, while Darien Zhao of UC Irvine shot 68-71-67—206 to finish in a tie for 19th that included his Anteaters teammate Jason Tang, who shot 65-68-73—206.
Fred Tindale led California Baptist in a tie for 25th at 70-71-67—208, while Josh Hu of UC Riverside tied for 55th at 71-71-70—212.
Rounding out the scoring for team champion Loyola Marymount were Cade Anderson, a junior from Scottsdale, Ariz., who tied for 25th at 73-69-66—208, Caden McMackin, a senior from Irvine, in a tie for 44th at 69-69-72—210, and Mason Snyder, a freshman from Las Vegas in a tie for 50th at 76-68-67—211.
Loyola Marymount will open the Spring Season in the Arizona N.I.T. at the Omni Tucson Golf Resort in Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 29.
