Paul Broadhurst of England carded a 6-under-par 66 at Pebble Beach Golf Links to take a two-stroke lead over five players in the PGA Tour Champions’ Nature Valley First Tee Open at Pebble Beach.
The 51-year-old Broadhurst birdied six holes on the front nine to make the turn in a bogey-free 30, and had two birdies and two bogeys coming home.
“Front nine, I played really well, as good as I’ve played since winning the British to be honest,” said Broadhurst, who captured the Senior Open Championship in July at Carnoustie for his second victory since turning 50.
“That’s been, you know, been a bit of a struggle since winning, so it was nice to hit some good shots today and put a good score on the board.”
Craig Parry of Australia, Jay Don Blake and Gene Sauers shot 4-under 68 at Pebble Beach to tie for seventh with Kevin Sutherland of Sacramento and Fresno State, and Tom Pernice Jr. of UCLA, who posted 67s at Poppy Hills.
Steve Pate of Westlake Village and UCLA matched Scott Dunlap’s 3-under 68 at Poppy Hills and they were tied for seventh with Stephen Ames of Canada, Woody Austin and Wes Short Jr., who all finished with 69s at Pebble Beach.
Mark O’Meara of Mission Viejo and Long Beach State, Marco Dawson and Jeff Maggert had 2-under 69s at Poppy Hills and were tied for 12th with Carlos Franco of Paraguay, Tim Petrovic and Joe Durant, who came in with 70s at Pebble Beach.
