Beau Hossler won both his matches and led top-ranked Texas into the match-play final of the NCAA Championships against host Oregon at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
Hossler, a junior from Mission Viejo, defeated Blaine Hale, 1 up, as the Longhorns downed Oklahoma, 4-1, in the quarterfinals, and beat Andrew Levitt, 3 and 2, as Texas got past USC in the semifinals.
However, Hossler’s availability for the final was in question because of left shoulder injury sustained during the quarterfinals.
“I wish I had some info for you, but I just don’t,” Hossler said later with his shoulder iced and wrapped. “Obviously, there was some pain, but I’ll be fine.”
Later, he posted this on Twitter: “Thank you for all the love and support. I will be fine. Looking forward to tomorrow.”
Rico Hoey gave USC its only point against the Longhorns with a 6-and-5 victory over Taylor Funk. Scottie Sheffler of Texas beat Sean Crocker, 1 up, Doug Ghim beat Justin Suh, 4 and 3, and Gavin Hall defeated Jonah Texeira, also by 4 and 3, for the other Longhorn victories.
Aaron Wise of Oregon, a sophomore from Lake Elsinore, beat Eric Richard, 3-2, as Oregon got past defending champion LSU in the quarterfinals, 3-1-1, and the Ducks edged Illinois, 3-2, in the semifinals even though Dylan Meyer upset Wise, 1 up.
In the other quarterfinal matches, USC beat Vanderbilt, 4-1, and Illinois turned back Vanderbilt, also by 4-1.
