Defending national champion Stanford tied USC in the NCAA Regional title at Stanford Golf Course and advanced to the NCAA Women’s Championships on May 20-25 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
Andrea Wong of UC Davis and Elizabeth Szokol of Virginia shared medalist honors, with Wong advancing to the national championships as an individual.
Stanford (pictured), ranked 12th in the nation, posted a score of 289-280-287–856, 4-over-par, and USC, coached by Andrea Gaston, totaled 287-284-285–856.
“Making it to the regionals is a big deal,” Cardinal Coach Anne Walker said. “You always hope it’s your week. To be at home and also play great, is thrilling. I always talk about steady, Stanford golf. And that’s what we did.”
Ohio State was third at 299-285-291–875, followed by North Carolina at 302-289-287–878, Arkansas at 298-291-290–879, and Virginia, which rounded out the national qualifiers at 288-296-299–883.
San Jose State finished ninth at 299-301-288–888, Pepperdine was 10th at 298-295-296–889, San Diego State wound up 12th at 299-297-299–895, and UC Riverside came in 16th at 306-313-308–927.
Wong, an Aggie senior from San Francisco, carded a score of 72-72-65–209, 4-under, setting a UC Davis record in the final round, while Szokol shot 73-69-67–209.
“Andrea put a fantastic round together today,” Aggie Coach Anna Temple said. “She has played well each round, but today the putts fell in. She stayed patient every round and today that level of discipline came to fruition.
“To finish atop the leaderboard at an NCAA regional is an awesome accomplishment. An opportunity to compete for a national championship is an honor and a privilege, and Andrea has worked with devotion and enthusiasm to be back in this position.”
Alana Uriell of Arkansas was third at 72-67-71–210, while Casey Danielson of Stanford totaled 72-68-71–211 to tie for fourth with Tiffany Chan of USC, who wound up at 71-69-71–211.
Senior Mariah Stackhouse, who scored the winning point to give Stanford the NCAA title last year, shot 69-70-73–212 to tie for sixth with Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest, who finished at 71-70-71–212, and Rio Watanabe of Ohio State, who came in at 71-72-69–212.
Gabriella Then of USC totaled 76-68-71–215 to tie for ninth with Alexandra Kaui of UNLV, who finished at 73-70-72–215, Elizabeth Mallett of North Carolina, who wound up at 75-70-70–215, and Sarah Burnham of Michigan State, who shot 71-71-73–215.
Rounding out the USC scoring were Robynn Ree in 13th at 71-74-71–216, Kyung Kim in a tie for 15th at 72-73-73–218, and Karen Chung in a tie for 50th at 73-80-72–225.
For Stanford, Lauren Kim tied for 14th at 76-72-69–217, Shannon Aubert tied for 22nd at 73-70-77–220, and Sierra Kersten in a tie for 42nd at 75-75-74–224.
Jakeishya Le led UC Riverside in a tie for 15th at 69-75-74–218, Marissa Chow of Pepperdine also tied for 15th at 71-76-71–218 and Milagros Chaves of San Diego State tied for 18th at 74-73-72–219.
Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton shot 77-73-70–220 and finished in a tie for 22nd that included My Leander of San Jose State, who totaled 73-73-74–220, and Kristin Simonsen of Fresno State tied for 27th at 76 -70 -75 –221 .
