UC Riverside claims Big West crown

Brandon Bauman of UC Santa Barbara claimed the individual title and UC Riverside won the Big West Conference Championship by three strokes over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley.

The Highlanders won their second conference title, the other coming in 2005, taking the lead for good when Brandon Tsujimoto, a junior from Pomona, sank a 70-foot eagle putt on the 18th hole.

UC Riverside finished at 294-280-288–862, two-under-par, followed by Cal Poly at 293-287-285–865 and UC Santa Barbara at 287-294-291–872, while UC Davis totaled 292-292-289–873 to tie for fourth with Long Beach State at 295-287-291–873.

Cal State Northridge was sixth at 294-290-299–883, followed by Cal State Fullerton at 294-303-291–888, UC Irvine at 301-293-297–891 and Hawaii at 307-296-301–904.

Bauman, a sophomore from Las Vegas, became the third Gaucho to win a conference title and earned his third victory of the season with a score of 72-69-71–212, four-under, holing a six-foot birdie putt on the last to beat Cole Nygren of Cal Poly, who finished at 74-70-69–213.

Matt Wilson of Cal State Fullerton shot 72-72-71–215 to tie for third with Tim Snyder of Cal State Northridge, who totaled 71-73-71–215, and Matt Lutz of UC Riverside, who came in at 76-68-71–215.

Felix Mory of Cal State Northridge carded a score of 72-72-73–217 to tie for sixth with Daniel Chan of Long Beach State, Daniel Chian of Long Beach State, who finished at 72-69-76–217, Zach Smith of UC Santa Barbara, who totaled 69-75-73–217, Michael Chen of Long Beach State, who wound up at 72-73-72–217, Jonny Hogan of Long Beach State, who shot 75-73-69–217, and Nick Englehardt of Cal Poly, who finished at 75-73-69–217.

Ben Corfee led UC Davis in a tie for 12th at 73-68-77–218, while David Kim of UC Irvine shot 75-72-73–220 and finished in a tie for 20th at included his Anteater teammate Jacob Schulze, who wound up at 72-72-76–220.
