Wilson wins SCGA Mid-Am for third time

Jeff Wilson of Fairfield won the Southern California Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship for the third time, but he had to go overtime.

Wilson made par on the fifth playoff hole to turn back 2016 SCGA Mid-Am champion Corby Segal of Santa Clarita, who two holes earlier kept things going with a long birdie putt in what was supposed to be a three-hole aggregate playoff at Saticoy Country Club in Somis. Wilson had to make an eight-foot par putt to stay alive.

Wilson, who joined Tim Hogarth (five) and Mark Johnson (three) as the only players to win the tournament three times, carded a score of 76-72— 148, 4-over-par, while Segal finished at 78-70—148.

The tournament was shortened to 36 holes when the afternoon round on the first day was rained out.

“I don’t know what it is about this tournament, or why I’m able to have so much success, but I’m glad to be mentioned along with those guys,” said Wilson, who also claimed the title in 2008 and 2015.

“I was pretty fortunate, because I played well in the morning (on day one) and shot 76. In the afternoon, (the wind) was really howling and I think I was 4-over and was going to make a bogey on (No. 6), or maybe worse, who knows. Your attitude starts going south pretty quickly, so to have the round washed out—it was pretty beneficial for me.”

Satch Hermann of Los Angeles was third at 73-77—150, while Hogarth shot 79-72—151 to tie for fourth with 2014 champion Ramie Sprinkling of Camarillo, who wound up at 77-74—151.

Dan Ragsdale of Westlake Village totaled 80-72—152 to tie for sixth with Iain MacDonald of Fullerton, who came in at 73-73—152, while Michael Rowley of San Luis Obispo totaled 73-80—153 to tie for eighth with Jesse Arian of La Crescenta, who wound up at 81-72—153.

Tim Tiel of San Diego shot 79-75—154 to tie for 10th with Craig Davis of Chula Vista (78-76—154), J.R. Warthen of Pacific Grove (75-79—154), Scott Gibson of Long Beach (79-75—154), and Torey Edwards of Long Beach (77-77—154).

Defending champion Dan Sullivan of Pasadena tied for 26th at 79-80—179.
